The Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales is now fully operational, with a capacity of 850 megawatts and 1,680 megawatt-hours. It is among the largest battery storage projects in the world.

At peak output, the battery can support electricity supply for up to 340,000 homes in New South Wales. It will play a grid-security role, helping keep the power system stable as coal plants retire.

Large batteries are becoming central to Australia’s energy transition. They store surplus solar and wind power and release it when demand peaks in the evening.

The project was built to guarantee grid stability after the expected closure of the Eraring coal power station. Its full operation marks a milestone for renewable integration in Australia’s national electricity market.
