Denmark-Greenland Defence Pact Counters US Pressure

Denmark and Greenland have agreed a new defence and security pact aimed at pushing back against American pressure, after US President Donald Trump earlier this year threatened to annex the Arctic island. The agreement deepens military cooperation between Copenhagen and Nuuk.

Under the pact, Denmark and Greenland will hold joint military exercises and share intelligence, strengthening the island's defences against foreign interference. Denmark retains authority over foreign policy and defence under Greenland's 2009 Self-Government Act, while Greenland continues to run its domestic affairs.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has stressed that Greenlanders will decide their own future themselves, rejecting any forced change of status. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said the agreement sends a clear signal that allies do not make territorial claims against one another.

Greenland's strategic location in the Arctic has made it a focus of great-power competition, with its air bases and shipping lanes seen as vital. The pact is the latest move by European allies to lock in security arrangements amid uncertainty over Washington's intentions.
