Murali Sreeshankar won silver in the men’s long jump at the Asian Games on Monday. The Kerala athlete produced a best effort of 8.07 metres in Nagoya.

China’s Shi Yuhao took gold with 8.17m. Sreeshankar battled an ankle injury during the final and skipped his last two attempts.

The silver marks a strong return for Sreeshankar after a long injury layoff. He had missed major events in recent seasons while recovering.

India also celebrated a double podium in the men’s javelin. Yashvir Singh won silver with a personal best of 85.72m, while Rohit Yadav took bronze at 84.35m.

India’s medal tally reached 45 on Monday, with four gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze. Athletics once again led the medal rush for the country. Coaches said the silver will boost India’s confidence ahead of the remaining athletics events. The 8.07m jump is among his best marks since returning from the long injury break.
