At least 81 people have died in Uttar Pradesh after three days of exceptionally heavy rain triggered flooding across several districts of northern India, officials said.

The state government said 46 people were injured and more than 1,000 houses damaged. Uttar Pradesh recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain between September 25 and 27, far above the normal 7.6 millimetres for the period, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal moved inland and intensified rainfall.

Major rivers including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and Bagmati rose above danger levels, and India’s Central Water Commission said 30 river-monitoring stations across seven states were in a severe situation.

Schools were closed in affected areas, including state capital Lucknow, while rescue teams evacuated residents from flooded locations. Authorities advised people to avoid waterlogged areas and stay away from fast-flowing rivers and drains.

Flooding also hit Odisha, where more than 75,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas, and neighbouring Nepal, where at least 21 people died in weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday.
