Sensex, Nifty slip as Brent crude climbs past $107

Indian equity benchmarks slipped on Tuesday as Brent crude climbed past $107 a barrel, deepening worries for the oil-importing economy. The Sensex traded about 583 points lower at 72,188 in mid-session trade, while the Nifty 50 fell to around 22,599. The benchmarks had closed Monday near six-month lows, with the Sensex ending at 72,771.72 and the Nifty at 22,780.25.
Rising crude prices threaten to widen India’s import bill, stoke inflation and squeeze corporate margins. The rupee also came under pressure, falling to 96.1450 against the dollar, a two-month low. Market breadth was weak, with most sectoral indices in the red.
Analysts said investors were tracking crude prices, global bond yields and foreign institutional flows for direction. The selloff extended a losing streak driven by surging energy costs and uncertainty over US trade policy. Traders said a sustained rise in oil could keep Indian markets under pressure in the near term.
