Google to replace Gemini Gems with Skills on November 17
Google will begin automatically moving Gemini Gems to its new Skills system on November 17, 2026, an in-app notice spotted by 9to5Google shows.
Gems, custom versions of Gemini that users create for repeated tasks, launched in 2024 and have been free for all Google account holders. Skills will take their place as the way to save custom instructions.
Users can call up a skill inside a chat by typing a slash, and several skills can be stacked in a single conversation. Existing Gems will keep working until each one migrates, and users do not need to do anything.
The catch is access. Skills currently need a Google AI Pro subscription at $19.99 a month or an Ultra plan at $99.99 a month. Users must also be over 18, on a personal account, and outside the EU, UK, Switzerland and Nigeria.
Google plans to convert Workspace business and non-profit accounts in March 2027 and education accounts in June that year.
