Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday demanded a probe into the Election Commission and the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

His demand follows a media report that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded objections at least 14 times in 10 months. The report says they differed on decisions linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The issues include changes to Form 6, access to the ERONet system and the striking of over 13 crore names from draft rolls across 30 states and Union Territories. The report put these details in the public domain on Monday.

The Election Commission has denied any dissent. It said all decisions were taken through a careful process and were unanimous.

The Congress held protests in Maharashtra on Monday against the CEC. The party says the functioning of the poll body needs an open inquiry.

Chavan said the report raises serious questions about how roll revisions are done. He said lakhs of voters may lose their names without a fair hearing. He asked Parliament to discuss the issue in the next session.
