Council poll notifications due today in four states

Formal notifications for biennial Legislative Council elections in four states are scheduled to be issued on 29 September. The Election Commission announced the schedule on 22 September.
Elections will be held for 28 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The seats come from Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies.
Uttar Pradesh has the largest share with 11 seats, followed by Bihar with eight, Maharashtra with five and Karnataka with four. Nominations close on 6 October.
Scrutiny of papers will take place on 7 October, and candidates can withdraw until 9 October. Polling is set for 23 October from 8 am to 4 pm, with counting on 27 October.
The Model Code of Conduct is already in force in the constituencies concerned. The entire election process will be completed by 31 October. Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies elect members through an indirect vote. Only registered graduates and teachers in these seats can cast ballots.
