NYT games director shot dead; in-laws arrested in California
A senior New York Times executive has been shot dead in California, and his elderly in-laws have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the Times’ director of engineering for its Games section, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park near Dublin Sports Grounds on Saturday, September 26. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, nearby within minutes. The married couple, McKinsey’s parents-in-law, were booked into Santa Rita Jail.
A police sergeant spotted McKinsey in the car park at about 3.08pm, around the time dispatchers began receiving 911 calls about gunfire. Witnesses helped officers locate the suspects.
Police have not disclosed a motive and say no one else is suspected. The Times confirmed McKinsey had worked there since 2023. The investigation continues.
