President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and restart nuclear negotiations.

“I rejected their deal,” Trump told reporters outside the White House on September 26, 2026, adding: “They want to make a deal where they open the strait immediately because they’re losing so badly. We’re winning tremendously.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had presented the plan at the United Nations General Assembly, conveyed through Qatari mediators. Under the proposal, Iran would reopen the vital oil shipping lane and resume nuclear talks in return for Washington lifting its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waiving sanctions on oil sales, releasing frozen assets and observing a regional ceasefire including Lebanon.

Iran said it had not received a formal rejection through official channels and remained open to diplomacy. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, and its closure has driven up oil prices.
