India’s industrial output grows 8% in August

India’s industrial output grew 8 per cent year-on-year in August 2026, government data showed. The strong performance was led by manufacturing, which expanded 9 per cent during the month.
Electricity and gas output rose 12.3 per cent, providing strong support to the overall index. Mining was the weak spot, contracting 5.6 per cent in August, according to the data.
The July 2026 growth figure was revised upward to 7.4 per cent in the latest release. The revisions point to sustained momentum in industrial activity through the quarter.
Economists said the manufacturing-led growth was encouraging for the broader economy. The data will be watched for signs of whether the momentum can carry into the festive season.
The data was released by the statistics ministry as part of the monthly IIP bulletin. Capital goods and consumer durables will be watched in the detailed release for signs of investment demand. The numbers will feed into GDP estimates for the quarter.
