At least one person was killed and 19 injured when Russian jet-powered drones struck Kyiv on Monday, hitting the National Academy of Sciences building.

The Kyiv military administration said six of the wounded were taken to hospital. Its chief, Serhiy Popko, called it one of the largest drone attacks on the capital since the war began.

The strike was part of a wider overnight barrage across Ukraine. In Dnipro, Russian attacks killed three people, officials said.

Russia has stepped up its use of jet-powered drones in recent weeks. They fly much faster than the propeller-driven drones used earlier in the war, giving air defences less time to respond.

Ukraine’s air force said it worked through the night to bring down the incoming drones. Several were shot down over the city, but debris and direct hits caused damage in multiple districts.

The attack came as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported fresh Russian strikes across the country, including on energy and civilian sites.
