A Wall Street Journal report has linked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to the collapse of Romania’s Bolojan government, alleging she boasted at a March dinner in Athens that Washington could topple governments at will.

The WSJ reported that Guilfoyle, at a dinner with Greek officials including Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, allegedly said of the Bolojan government’s fall: “We can do this to any country we want. We can do it here too.” The reporting connects the alleged remarks to the Vertical (Gas) Corridor LNG project; the Bolojan government had opposed buying U.S. gas above market price.

On March 31, Guilfoyle met PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu in Bucharest. Days later, the PSD allied with the pro-Russian AUR party in a no-confidence vote that toppled Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

Guilfoyle’s lawyer has disputed the WSJ’s account, and Grindeanu called the allegations “pure fabrications.” The fallout is growing: Foreign Minister Oana Toiu spoke with U.S. Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg on Sept. 28, and USR deputy Alexandru Dimitriu filed a criminal complaint for treason. The claims remain allegations reported by the WSJ.
