Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb late in Sunday’s 23-16 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings, head coach Todd Bowles said. The injury came on a desperation fourth-down pass with 1:39 left. X-rays showed no fracture, but Mayfield will have an MRI on Monday and is expected to miss time.

Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels replaced Mayfield for the final possession but completed none of his three passes, including a game-ending interception. Mayfield finished 17 of 34 for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The touchdown pass was the 199th of his NFL career.

The Buccaneers fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2014, when they finished 2-14 and took Jameis Winston first overall. The Vikings moved to 3-0 behind an 86-yard punt-return touchdown from Myles Price and a 41-yard touchdown pass from Kyler Murray to Jordan Addison. Minnesota also lost star receiver Justin Jefferson to an ankle injury.

Why it matters: Tampa Bay’s season could hinge on how long Mayfield is out — Jalon Daniels would start next Sunday against the Green Bay Packers if Mayfield cannot play.
