Brussels: Belgian security officials say Iran ordered a coordinated campaign of attacks on Jewish targets in Belgium earlier this year.

Gert Vercauteren, head of Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis, told public broadcaster RTBF that those behind a bomb attack on a synagogue in Liege and the torching of a car in Antwerp ‘certainly followed Iran’s call to strike Jewish and Israeli interests everywhere in the world’.

The explosive device detonated in front of the Great Synagogue of Liege on March 9, damaging the main door and shattering windows. Days later, a vehicle was set on fire in Antwerp’s Jewish quarter. No one was hurt in either attack.

Vercauteren said the attacks were part of a coordinated effort, not isolated acts. An individual suspected of coordinating attacks in Europe was later arrested in Turkey.

He added that other security interventions had taken place and no further attacks attributed to the network have been recorded since.

The national terrorist threat level remains at 3 on a scale of 4.
