US diesel prices have crossed $6 a gallon for the first time in history. GasBuddy data showed the national average passing the mark on Sept. 10, and Reuters reported the milestone.

AAA data put the average at $6.1602 a gallon on Sept. 12. That broke the June 2022 record set after Russia invaded Ukraine. Later AAA figures showed $6.5050 as the global fuel crunch deepened, per OilPrice.

The rise has been fast. The prior record was $5.85 a gallon on Sept. 4. Prices jumped about 15 cents in days. Diesel is up about 66 percent from roughly $3.70 a year earlier, per the reports.

The drivers are familiar. A six-month US-Israel-Iran war is choking fuel flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Ukrainian drone strikes have hit Russian refining capacity. Fuel export restrictions have tightened.

The International Energy Agency says Gulf diesel and gasoil exports fell to about 390,000 barrels a day in August. That is about 1.6 million barrels a day below February for the Gulf and Russia combined. With US midterms in early November, fuel costs carry political weight.
