The trailer for Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk documentary is out, and it is earning strong early praise. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it “a lacerating and important watch,” per reports. Deadline’s Matthew Carey said it is “engrossing from the start.”

The film is 225 minutes long. The Venice version ran 3 hours 45 minutes plus a 10-minute intermission. The HBO version in 2027 will run a full four hours.

The runtime is the biggest complaint online. Commenters suggest editing it down or releasing it as a miniseries. No miniseries version has been announced.

Gibney began filming in late 2022 expecting a two-hour documentary. Interviewees include Justine Musk, Kara Swisher, Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard, and Geoffrey Hinton. Musk declined to take part and has called the film a “hit piece.”

Bleecker Street will release the film in US theaters. Select theaters in Los Angeles and New York open Oct. 9. Sources vary on the nationwide date, with Oct. 16 and Oct. 23 both reported. The home and streaming date is unconfirmed.
