NBC News reported on September 28 that an Iranian cruise missile struck a maritime vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on September 14, wounding eight US Marines. The network cited three unnamed US officials.

The Marines suffered smoke inhalation and concussion-like symptoms, including headaches and possible traumatic brain injuries, according to the report. Seven enlisted Marines and one officer were affected, serving as part of a battalion landing team. The vessel was not a commissioned US Navy ship, and its class and flag were undisclosed.

None of the eight was seriously injured, and all returned to duty shortly after the attack, according to the report. The Pentagon did not publicly report the September 14 incident, and CENTCOM declined to comment to NBC.

The injuries were entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System about ten days after the strike. A US defence official attributed the delay to symptoms manifesting days later and the casualty system’s lack of real-time reporting.

There is no official Pentagon confirmation of the strike, no second independent newsroom confirmation has been found, and Iran has not commented on this specific attack.
