CCPA Fines Amazon, Flipkart, JioMart Over Herbicide Sales

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has fined Amazon and Flipkart Rs 10 lakh each and JioMart Rs 5 lakh for selling an unregistered herbicide on their platforms.
The product, marketed as “Cyclosinone Herbicide,” was being sold and advertised without approval, the regulator found. Orders issued on September 22 directed the three companies to immediately stop selling and advertising it.
The CCPA also asked the platforms to conduct self-audits and submit compliance reports within 15 days. The probe began after the Crop Care Federation of India complained through the Union Agriculture Ministry.
The ministry told the regulator that no chemical named Cyclosinone appears in the Schedule to the Insecticides Act, 1968. The product was sold without disclosing the chemical name of its active ingredient or its composition, bypassing safety, quality and legal checks.
The regulator rejected the argument that seller contracts remove the platforms’ obligations. In Amazon’s case, it cited 38,410 orders covering 43,634 units worth Rs 96.43 lakh as the scale of exposure. The order signals that e-commerce platforms cannot rely only on seller declarations and must vet listings themselves.
