Defending champions India face Afghanistan in the men’s cricket quarterfinal at the Asian Games on Monday, but heavy rain threatens the match in Nisshin.

The game is scheduled to start at 2 pm local time, which is 10:30 am IST, at Korogi Sports Park. AccuWeather forecasts a very high chance of rain through the day, with some projections putting the risk near 90 percent or higher.

If the match is washed out, India will advance to the semifinals. Under tournament rules, the higher-seeded team goes through, and India are the world’s top-ranked T20I side while Afghanistan are ranked 10th.

India, led by Shreyas Iyer, are defending the gold medal they won at the last Asian Games. Afghanistan qualified after rain ended the Japan-Nepal group game and settled the knockout picture.

The teams last met in a T20I series in New Delhi earlier this year, which India swept 3-0, though Afghanistan’s current squad looks very different. The slow pitch at Korogi is expected to favour spinners. India will hope the skies clear so they can defend their title on the field rather than advance by default.
