President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to 32 percent in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, the lowest reading for him in that polling series across both of his presidencies. Sixty-six percent said they disapprove of his performance.

The survey was conducted online from September 17 to 20 among 1,277 US adults, with a margin of error of about 3 percentage points. It marks a 15-point slide from the 47 percent approval he held at the start of his second term in the same poll.

The drop was driven by Republicans turning sour on his handling of the cost of living. Approval among Republicans fell to 73 percent from 86 percent in January, and their approval of his cost-of-living handling plunged from 70 percent to 44 percent.

Only 17 percent of Americans approved of his handling of the cost of living, the issue voters say will matter most in the midterm elections. For the first time, a majority of Republicans, 51 percent, disapproved of his performance on that issue.

The poll lands about six weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, in which Republicans will try to defend slim majorities in the House and Senate.
