Brazil’s National Conference of Bishops (CNBB) says it is having trouble getting into its official account on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The bishops’ conference said in a statement that its communications office “reports that it is experiencing difficulties accessing the institution’s official account.”
The problem emerged as the conference was using the account to denounce foreign interference in Brazil’s elections and defend the country’s sovereignty. Archbishop Emeritus Dom Orlando Brandes recently used social media to declare that no outside power should decide Brazil’s affairs.
The conference said it has contacted X’s support team and submitted proof of account ownership to recover access. X has not commented publicly on the matter.
The episode comes during a tense election period in Brazil, when debates over the role of outside forces in the country’s politics have grown louder. Church leaders in Brazil have increasingly weighed in on sovereignty and democracy in recent weeks.
