Madison police arrested two fraternity leaders after finding around 30 pledges in an apparent hazing incident at an off-campus fraternity house near the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Officers arrived at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house on Langdon Street at about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, after an anonymous tip. Inside a basement room, police found the young men, mostly 18 and partially clothed, covered in food, condiments, and other liquids. Several had visible injuries that police described as consistent with being physically assaulted. The thermostat was set to 81 degrees, making the room hot and humid. Officers declared the event unlawful, escorted everyone outside, and checked the pledges for injuries. Fraternity president Brayden J. Klein and vice president Samuel N. Vane, both 20, were arrested on suspicion of hazing and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors. They were booked into Dane County Jail and later released. The university, which revoked the chapter’s recognition in 2015, is investigating, and the district attorney will review the case.
