Jon Watts will direct the first film of a new 'Star Wars' trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The news follows initial reports from Knight Edge Media and industry insider Daniel Richtman. Watts directed the three Tom Holland 'Spider-Man' films and co-created the Disney+ series 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.'

Kinberg's trilogy is expected to continue the Skywalker Saga after 2019's 'The Rise of Skywalker.' Reports say Daisy Ridley is expected to return as Rey in a smaller role, with Lucasfilm casting new leads. The films take place after the events of the sequel trilogy.

Watts is attached only to the first installment for now. The film has not yet been officially greenlit by Disney, but reports describe it as the 'furthest along' of several Lucasfilm projects in development. Some outlets have dubbed it 'Episode X,' though the title remains unofficial. Lucasfilm declined to comment.

The project would mark Watts's return to the franchise after 'Skeleton Crew.' The saga's next theatrical entry is 'Star Wars: Starfighter,' due May 28, 2027.
