12-Man Knights Stun Panthers to Reach NRL Grand Final
The Newcastle Knights are through to their first NRL grand final since 2001 after a stunning 22-14 win over Penrith on Sunday.
The Knights played with 12 men for 44 minutes after hooker Phoenix Crossland was sent off in the 36th minute for a hip-drop tackle that left Penrith star Nathan Cleary with a broken leg.
Trailing 14-6 at half time, Newcastle refused to concede another point. Halfback Sandon Smith scored twice, including a quick tap from halfway in the 59th minute that caught the Panthers off guard.
Smith sealed the win in the dying seconds, intercepting a Liam Martin pass and racing 80 meters to score. He converted his own try to complete the eight-point win.
The victory came in front of 57,102 fans at Accor Stadium. The Knights finished seventh this season after winning the wooden spoon last year. They will face the Sydney Roosters in the grand final on Sunday, October 4.
