Congress ‘vote theft’ protest: what we know so far

The Congress Youth has called a march in Delhi on October 10. The protest is about the alleged large-scale deletion of voter names. Here is what we know so far.
The party claims 130 million voter names were dropped from rolls across India. The call for the Jantar Mantar march came via a post by leader Abhijeet Dipke. The party says thousands of its workers were detained ahead of the event.
Delhi Police have deployed over 26,000 personnel for October 9 and 10. Liquor shops will stay shut on both days. Some trains are cancelled and some metro station exits will stay closed. Police said no formal permission was granted for the march.
Opposition leaders plan to meet President Droupadi Murmu on the issue. The Election Commission has not responded to the 130-million figure. The day’s events will test both the protest’s scale and the capital’s security grid.
The Election Commission conducts voter list revisions before every major election. The opposition has questioned the process in several states. Saturday’s march will show how much public support the issue draws.
