India lose 1-6 to Uruguay in Kolkata international friendly

India lost 1-6 to Uruguay in an international friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Tuesday. A crowd of 37,307 watched the match.

Darwin Nunez gave Uruguay an early lead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute. Anirudh Thapa equalised for India in the 22nd minute after the goalkeeper spilled a shot.

Play was briefly stopped due to lightning. After the restart, Uruguay took control. Maximiliano Araujo scored twice. Rodrigo Zalazar, Juan Sanabria and Rodrigo Aguirre added the others.

Thapa became only the second Indian to score against Uruguay in a senior international. Manas Bhattacharya scored the first in a 1982 Nehru Cup match at Eden Gardens.

Coach Khalid Jamil took full responsibility for the defeat. India finished the three-match window with two defeats and one draw. The Indian Super League starts on October 10. Uruguay are two-time world champions and were coached by Diego Forlan in this window. India also drew 1-1 with Panama and lost 0-4 to Brazil earlier in the window.
