Duterte’s ICC trial explained: charges, timeline, what’s next

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will go on trial at the International Criminal Court on November 30. Here is what the case is about.
Duterte, 81, faces charges of murder and attempted murder as crimes against humanity. Prosecutors link him to at least 76 deaths during his war on drugs, which killed thousands of civilians between 2016 and 2022.
He was arrested in the Philippines in March 2025 and sent to The Hague. On October 8, ICC judges ruled he is fit to stand trial, rejecting defence claims of cognitive decline. An expert panel said he can understand the charges and assist his lawyers.
ICC trials usually last several years. If convicted, Duterte faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He denies the charges, and his former lawyer has called them politically motivated.
Context: Duterte is the first former Asian leader to be sent to the world’s only permanent war crimes court.
