Death of Spain’s Maricarmen sparks political blame game

Spanish politicians traded blame on Thursday after the death of Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman whose eviction became the symbol of Spain’s housing crisis.

Abascal died on Wednesday at Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon hospital. She had been hospitalised for severe anxiety and exhaustion since her eviction on September 23 from the flat she had lived in for more than 70 years. No cause of death has been announced.

Her eviction sparked nationwide protests over housing shortages and surging rents. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called a snap general election for November 29. The Tenants Union said an agreement had been reached with the property company that would have let Abascal return home after leaving hospital. “This solution has come too late,” it said.

Opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo accused Sanchez of exploiting the crisis. Madrid leader Isabel Diaz Ayuso blamed the central government. Left-wing parties accused conservatives of blocking housing measures.

Context: protesters lit candles in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square, chanting that Abascal had been “murdered” by landlord greed.
