Finland orders Google to halt data centre work

Finland has ordered Google to stop major site work at two planned data centres over missing environmental reviews. The Finnish Licensing and Supervisory Authority told Google’s subsidiary Tuike Finland Oy to suspend work at sites in Muhos and Kajaani immediately, and no later than October 23. Regulators found that hundreds of hectares of forest had been cleared before required environmental impact assessments were finished. About 330 hectares were felled or prepared at Muhos and nearly 200 at Kajaani-Otanmäki. The order covers tree removal, excavation, blasting, drainage and site roads. Planning and soil surveys may continue. Tuike Finland must explain how it will proceed by October 14. Google spokesman Sondre Ronander acknowledged the shortcomings and said the company would follow the regulator’s guidance. Google called the projects its single biggest investment in Europe. The Nordic region attracts data centres with its cool climate and cheap clean power, but AI builders face growing scrutiny from regulators and local communities.
