Opposition protests enter third day over CEC row

Indian opposition parties demonstrated for a third day on Thursday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of voter lists. The opposition, student units and the Cockroach youth movement have held near-daily protests, accusing the Election Commission of revising voter rolls to help the BJP. The BJP and the poll panel deny the charges. On Wednesday, police briefly detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra and other lawmakers as they tried to reach the Jantar Mantar protest site in Delhi. Congress accused police of using brute force. On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi climbed a police barricade waving the tricolour before being detained near Akashvani Bhavan. The opposition says more than 130 million names were removed from draft voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision. The Commission said it only proposed a 237-member delegation meeting, which it rejected, insisting talks happen at its office. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear petitions challenging the voter drive. The protests are a fresh challenge for PM Modi midway through his third term.
