Altman: AI benefits worth accepting some risks

OpenAI chief Sam Altman says the benefits of artificial intelligence justify accepting some risks — and the technology should stay broadly accessible.
“We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency,” Altman told Politico’s Decoded newsletter.
Altman drew a sharp contrast with rival Anthropic, saying there is “a lot of daylight” between their worldviews on AI regulation.
He called it “a completely unacceptable trade-off” to let a single lab control AI to guarantee zero harm, backing a “lighter-touch regulatory stance” instead.
The remarks drew fire. Florida governor Ron DeSantis and AI critic Gary Marcus accused Altman of letting tech leaders decide risks for everyone.
The debate follows Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s September essay urging the industry to slow down and “pace the frontier” — a stance Altman publicly endorsed.
An Anthropic researcher resigned in September, warning that AI builders believe it “could kill us all by the end of the decade”.
