Cena reveals WWE pitched his heel turn days before

John Cena’s shocking WWE heel turn was pitched just days before it happened, new revelations have confirmed.
The Rock revealed this week that WWE chief content officer Triple H pitched the idea of Cena turning villain. The turn had originally been planned for WrestleMania 41.
Instead, after 22 years as a babyface, Cena turned heel in the closing moments of Elimination Chamber, aligning with The Rock and Travis Scott to attack Cody Rhodes.
Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer reported the final decision came “within the last couple of days” — and it was Cena himself who chose to do it that night.
Cena went on to beat Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 to become a 17-time world champion. The heel run lasted five months before he turned babyface again before SummerSlam.
Cena has since called the turn a worthwhile experiment, saying he was glad to “swing boldly” during his retirement tour.
The behind-the-scenes story features in Netflix’s WWE Unreal series, which pulls back the curtain on WWE creative.
