Heavy Rain Lashes Tamil Nadu and Kerala; 12 cm at Pillur Dam

Heavy to very heavy rain lashed Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal in the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning, with 12 cm recorded at Pillur Dam near Mettupalayam.
Kothagiri, Siruvani Adivaram and Kil Kotagiri Estate each received 8 cm, while Alakarai Estate and Geddai recorded 7 cm, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The downpour comes as the retreating southwest monsoon overlaps with the advancing northeast monsoon, keeping the southern peninsula unsettled. A cyclonic circulation persists off the south Kerala coast.
Widespread thunderstorms are forecast for Kerala, coastal Karnataka and south and west Tamil Nadu until Saturday. Kerala’s Met Centre has a heavy rainfall watch through October 10, with gusts of 40 to 50 kmph expected on October 9 and 10.
The IMD also forecasts isolated heavy rain over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal over the next three days.
Fishermen have been advised caution along the Tamil Nadu coasts, though no formal marine warning was in force as of Thursday morning.
