CNN, MS NOW, Politico in court over White House ban

Three news outlets returned to court on Thursday in their fight against the White House. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico asked a federal judge for a longer-term order blocking the ban that keeps them out of the White House.
President Donald Trump announced the ban on September 18. He called the three outlets “fake news” and took away their press passes. The outlets sued, saying the ban breaks rules of free speech and fair process.
On September 24, US District Judge Timothy Kelly gave the outlets a win. He issued a temporary order restoring their access for 14 days. Kelly was appointed by Trump in 2017.
Thursday’s hearing is about a longer order. The outlets want protection for their access until the court makes a final decision. The government argues the White House can control who gets inside.
The case comes as the midterm elections approach on November 3. Trump has also banned CNN and Politico from Air Force One.
Media groups say the ban is a threat to press freedom. The court has not yet ruled on the new request.
