Portugal Climbs to No. 5 in FIFA Rankings; Spain Stay Top

Portugal climbed two spots to No. 5 in the latest FIFA world rankings released on October 7, the only team in the top 10 to move up.
Portugal won all four of their UEFA Nations League games in the window, beating Norway twice and Wales and Denmark once each. They moved ahead of Brazil, who fell to sixth, and Morocco, who dropped to seventh after friendly draws.
Spain remain No. 1 with 2,011.57 points, extending their lead after winning the 2026 World Cup. Argentina are second, followed by France and England. Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico complete the top 10.
Portugal’s rise came under new coach Jorge Jesus despite Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the camp mid-window amid a controversy. Switzerland jumped two places to 12th, while Rwanda were the biggest risers, up nine spots to 119th. The rankings will next be updated on November 18.
Spain, who won the 2026 World Cup by beating Argentina 1-0 in the final, are on a 42-match unbeaten run. Argentina played Lionel Messi’s final international match, a 3-0 win over Benin.
