Ex-German chancellor Schroder takes supermarket board role in Moscow

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder visited a Hyperglobus supermarket on Moscow's western outskirts on 7 October.
Russian television footage showed staff greeting him with applause.
Schroder, 82, has joined the supervisory board of Hyperglobus.
The company runs the Russian supermarket chain that once belonged to German retailer Globus.
RBC reported the appointment on 2 October.
Hyperglobus was spun off from Germany's Globus Holding in 2025. It is owned by Thomas Bruch.
The Russian stores still use the Globus brand.
Schroder will support the strategic development of the business.
His appointment came four days after Moscow placed the Russian assets of German retailer Metro AG under temporary administration.
Schroder was German chancellor from 1998 to 2005. He later worked for Russian state companies.
He remains heavily criticised in Germany, especially since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Russian media gave wide coverage to the visit.
The footage showed shoppers and staff applauding as he walked through the store.
The visit underlines Schroder's continued business presence in Russia despite Western sanctions on Moscow.
