Afghanistan opens 121-km Wakhan road to China border

Afghanistan has officially opened a 121-kilometre road through the remote Wakhan Corridor to the Chinese border.
The gravel road runs from the Broghil area of Badakhshan province to the zero point near the Chinese border at the Wakhjir Pass. It was inaugurated on October 4.
The project cost 365 million Afghanis, about $5.5 million. It includes 66 culverts, four major bridges and protective retaining walls.
Abdul Latif Mansour, the Taliban-appointed minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, said the road has political, strategic and economic importance.
Officials described it as a potential route for expanding trade and transit links with China. It also improves access for isolated communities in the Wakhan and Pamir areas.
The road does not by itself create a fully operational commercial border crossing. Customs and transport infrastructure would still be needed for large-scale trade.
