Germany’s Foreign Minister Visits ICC, Pledges Support

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Monday in a show of support for the tribunal.
“The German government completely supports the court,” Wadephul said. He added that Berlin is working with other states to keep the court functional.
The visit comes as the Trump administration has sanctioned 13 ICC staff members, including key prosecutors and nine judges. Among them is the court’s Japanese president Tomoko Akane.
President Trump has called the court a “rogue institution”. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has launched what he called a campaign to dismantle the threat posed by the ICC.
Officials in the Netherlands have been warned that sanctions on the entire court are imminent.
Such sanctions could block the court from financial and IT services. They could even stop it from paying its US employees.
The EU’s blocking statute is being discussed as a possible countermeasure. It could stop European companies from complying with the US sanctions.
The ICC currently has 125 member states.
