Jaishankar meets Ghana leaders, discusses AU, ECOWAS ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on October 6-7, on the first leg of a three-nation tour of Africa.
The two ministers held wide-ranging discussions on advancing the comprehensive partnership in trade, investments, development, pharmaceuticals, capacity building, defence, technology and people-to-people ties.
"As Global South partners, both India and Ghana share common development aspirations and historic solidarity," Jaishankar posted on X after the meeting.
The two sides also discussed advancing multilateral cooperation and deepening India's engagement with the African Union and ECOWAS, the 15-member Economic Community of West African States. Ghana is a founding member of ECOWAS, and President Mahama will assume the AU presidency in 2027.
Jaishankar's visit is the first leg of a five-day official tour that will also take him to Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia. India-Ghana ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit last year.
