4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam’s Nagaon, No Damage Reported

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Nagaon district early on October 6. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said there were no reports of damage or injuries.
The quake hit at 4:23:47 AM IST. Its epicentre was at latitude 26.428 North and longitude 93.060 East, at a depth of 33 kilometres. Tremors were felt across several parts of Assam. Many residents woke up in panic and stepped out of their homes.
The NCS shared the details on social media. A German agency, GFZ, later listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. Experts said a quake of this size was unlikely to cause major damage but would have been felt as light shaking near the epicentre.
Assam lies in a high seismic zone and often records earthquakes. A day earlier, a smaller 2.5 magnitude quake had struck Una in Himachal Pradesh at a depth of 9 kilometres. No casualties were reported in that event either. Authorities have asked residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during tremors.
