World Bank ranks India among top 10 in AI readiness: what it means

The World Bank has placed India among the top 10 emerging markets in AI readiness. The finding is in its latest India Development Update, released on October 6.
The report is titled India and Artificial Intelligence: Seizing the Development Opportunity. It says India is well placed to gain from AI.
Private AI investment in India jumped sharply. It rose from 1.2 billion dollars in 2024 to 4.1 billion dollars in 2025. The report credits India’s large tech workforce, strong IT sector and digital public infrastructure.
Jobs in Global Capability Centres also grew. They rose from 1.9 million professionals in 2024 to 2.36 million in 2025.
The Bank sounded a note of caution too. The long-term impact of AI on jobs is still uncertain. India will need policies to spread the benefits widely.
Acting country director Paul Procee said AI could be one of India’s most powerful tools to raise productivity and improve public services.
The report calls for better digital infrastructure, easier business rules, and stronger worker skills. Small, locally adapted AI tools could help the most people, it said.
