81 US Aircraft Lost in Iran War, $3.3B Toll: Congress Report

The United States has lost or suffered damage to at least 81 military aircraft since operations against Iran began on Feb. 28. The toll could reach $3.3 billion.
A revised Congressional Research Service report, updated Oct. 5, lists fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and drones lost or damaged in Operation Epic Fury. The earlier May edition listed 42.
Drones make up the largest share: at least 45 MQ-9 Reapers and one MQ-4C Triton. Crewed losses include 12 F-15E Strike Eagles, two A-10s, seven KC-135 tankers, one E-3 Sentry and a damaged F-35A.
Three F-15Es were downed by friendly fire over Kuwait on March 2, and another was shot down over Iran in April. Eight F-15Es were damaged in Iranian strikes on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan in September but returned to service.
A Congressional Budget Office estimate put replacement costs through August 1 at $1.9 billion to $3.3 billion. The report draws on Pentagon statements, US Central Command and the inspector general.
