Two-Thirds of Americans Now Back Medicare for All: KFF Poll

Two-thirds of Americans now favour a national health plan, often called Medicare for All. It is the highest support ever recorded for the idea.
A September 2026 KFF Health Tracking Poll, released Oct. 6, found 66% of US adults favour a plan in which all Americans get insurance from a single government plan. That is up from 53% in October 2020.
Support cuts across parties, though unevenly. About 84% of Democrats and 72% of independents favour it. Most Republicans oppose it, but even a third of Republicans now favour the idea, up from a fifth in 2020.
Support moves with the details. It rises to 76% if the plan guarantees insurance as a right. It falls to 52% if private insurance is eliminated, and to 24% if it could delay medical tests and treatments.
Health costs are the top economic worry for voters, with 60% worried about affording care. Democrats are trusted more than Republicans on health costs, 42% to 22%.
The poll lands less than a month before the midterms, with progressive candidates making health reform central to their campaigns.
