FAA Probes Delta Jet Clipping Air Canada Plane at LAX

The wing of a Delta Air Lines jet clipped the tail of an Air Canada plane at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday. The FAA is investigating.

Delta Flight 7, an Airbus A350, was taxiing for departure around 10:30 am local time. Its left wingtip hit the horizontal stabiliser of Air Canada Flight 785, a Boeing 777 that was being towed to its gate. The Air Canada jet had just arrived from Toronto.

The Delta plane was heading to Tokyo with 275 passengers and 15 crew. No injuries were reported. Both aircraft were taken out of service for inspection and repairs.

“We just felt a shudder there. Is everything looking ok?” the Air Canada pilot asked ground control, according to audio captured by ATC.com. “It looks like we are having an issue with the wing tip,” the Delta pilot replied.

Delta apologised to customers for the experience and the travel delays. It said safety is its top priority and that it will cooperate with investigators.

Photos shared online showed minor damage to the wingtip and the tail. Airport officials said flights at LAX continued to operate normally.
