4.9-Magnitude Quake Hits Chamoli; Tremors Felt in Delhi

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Chamoli district in Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, with tremors felt across Delhi and the National Capital Region.
The quake hit late at night, and residents in parts of Delhi-NCR reported feeling the ground shake. Many people stepped out of their homes as a precaution.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of damage in the Delhi-NCR area after the tremors. The epicentre was located in Chamoli, in the hill state of Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand sits in one of India’s most earthquake-prone zones, and mild to moderate tremors are recorded there every year. The state disaster management teams monitor such events closely.
Officials advised residents to stay alert for aftershocks and to follow standard safety steps during earthquakes, such as moving to open ground and avoiding elevators.
The National Centre for Seismology records the region’s quakes and shares data with disaster agencies. People in high-rise buildings felt the shaking more clearly. So far, officials have not reported any injuries or major damage in Chamoli or the national capital region.
