India Calls for Balanced Climate Action at Pre-COP31

India has called for equal focus on climate adaptation, mitigation and means of implementation at the Pre-COP31 meetings in Nadi, Fiji. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav addressed the leaders’ plenary on October 6.
Yadav said the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities must be upheld in letter and spirit. He stressed that countries have different responsibilities and capacities in tackling climate change. The Pre-COP meeting was co-hosted by Australia, Fiji and Tuvalu ahead of COP31 in Turkiye this November.
India offered to share its coastal resilience and space-based expertise with Pacific nations. Institutions like ISRO, the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management and the National Centre for Coastal Research have built expertise in coastal vulnerability assessment and shoreline monitoring.
India is working with Pacific nations on health, renewable energy, resilient infrastructure, early warning systems and agriculture. The full COP31 summit is scheduled for November 9 to 20 in Antalya, Turkiye, where adaptation finance and stronger climate commitments will dominate.
