US trade deficit widens to $105.6 billion in August

The United States trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion in August 2026. The gap grew as imports rose faster than exports.
The bilateral deficit with India stood at $6.2 billion for the month. That figure will interest policymakers on both sides.
Analysts said importers pulled orders forward ahead of expected tariff changes. Such front-loading often inflates the deficit temporarily.
The numbers come as the US keeps high tariffs on Indian goods. The total rate stands at 50% on many products.
Economists expect the deficit to stay wide in the near term. Trade talks with key partners remain unsettled.
The deficit figures are released by the US Census Bureau. Economists said services trade partly offsets the goods gap. The India number reflects strong US demand for Indian goods. Tariff changes this year have reshaped trade flows. Analysts will watch September data for signs of a pullback. The deficit debate remains central to US trade policy.
