Nobel Chemistry 2026: announced today, favourites in focus

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced today, October 7, by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at 11:45 CEST, or 3:15 PM IST. It is the third prize of this year's Nobel week. The medicine prize went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel on Monday for their work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. On Tuesday, Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen won the physics prize for his work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from deep space.Clarivate's annual Citation Laureates list offers the best-read shortlist. In chemistry it names six researchers in three groups: David Allara, Ralph Nuzzo and Jacob Sagiv for self-assembled monolayers; Harry Gray and Jay Winkler for long-range electron transfer in proteins; and David Liu for base editing and prime editing.Clarivate notes 89 of its citation laureates since 2002 have later won a Nobel. But the list measures citation weight, not the committee's thinking, so it remains a signal rather than a forecast.
