Three states hold 45% of India’s rooftop solar capacity in September

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat accounted for 45 per cent of India's residential rooftop solar capacity in September, new data shows. India's residential rooftop capacity under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana crossed 17,500 megawatts in September 2026.According to JMK Research and Analytics, Uttar Pradesh led September installations with 234.46 MW, followed by Maharashtra at 208.04 MW and Gujarat at 165.6 MW. UP received 93,437 applications against 74,784 installations, while Gujarat received over 1.5 lakh applications against 45,221 installations.Pan-India installed residential rooftop capacity stood at 17,561 MW across nearly 60 lakh households as of September. Uttar Pradesh has now topped monthly additions for three straight months. However, national monthly additions fell for the third consecutive month, from 1,592 MW in July to 1,357.52 MW in September, a 2.2 per cent month-on-month decline. Analysts say accelerating deployment among registered-but-not-yet-installed consumers is the key challenge. The scheme aims to solarise one crore households by 2027.
